Sloww Sunday Newsletter 018 (May 31, 2020) — Our Planet, Essentialism Explained, The Deep Life, & More
Hi friends,
Sloww Sunday is a weekly newsletter sharing inspiration to awaken the art of living.
In a modern world focused on the trendy, here’s your dose of the timeless.
1 // Sloww Stuff
🆕 “So, what do you do?” An Introduction to Synthesis, Integration, Interdisciplinarity, & More — Recently, someone on Twitter asked me how I describe what I do. The question sparked an adventure into one of my deepest Wikipedia rabbit holes ever. This post introduces about 20 concepts with short overviews.
🔒 How to Adjust your Unconscious Default Setting with “This is Water” by David Foster Wallace (+ Infographic) — I believe I now understand David Foster Wallace’s message at an even deeper level than when I first listened to the speech. Why? A certain amount of living life is needed to really “see” and understand his key points. Those key points are what we’ll explore in this premium post.
🔒 Premium Member Infographics — A new page that’s a dedicated library for quick access to premium post infographics. Download them, practice them, master them, integrate them, embody them.
My goal is to continue making Sloww Premium a total no-brainer purchase by releasing more and more new content each week. If you have suggestions to make it even better, please let me know. You can get immediate lifetime access by joining Premium.
“I love your work. I got the premium to support. Thank you so much for the marvelous work and love within. Keep enjoying the process.” — Legoes J.
2 // TV Series I’m Watching
📺 Our Planet (Netflix & YouTube | 8 episodes)
It turns out Netflix put this award-winning docuseries on YouTube for free! Prepare for multiple jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring moments per episode. Nature is an unfathomably genius design.
During my existential crisis a few years ago, I watched a bunch of nature shows/videos to begin resetting perspective and rewiring my mind.
For maximum natural impact, pair with a little forest bathing, the overview effect, and Spaceship Earth.
“We need to learn how to work with nature rather than against it.” — David Attenborough
3 // Podcast I’m Listening To
🎧 Essentialism Explained: How to Focus on What Matters with Greg McKeown (Modern Wisdom Podcast | 90 mins | YouTube | Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher)
This conversation is a breath of fresh air. It covers all the essentials: trade-offs, less but better, JOMO (Joy Of Missing Out), the paradox of success, and more.
Pair with my “Essentialism” book summary and how to pick a path and make progress with “Essentialism” + “Atomic Habits” (Premium).
“Only once you give yourself the permission to stop trying to do it all, to stop saying yes to everyone, can you make your highest contribution towards the things that really matter.” — Greg McKeown
4 // Article I’m Reading
📖 The Deep Reset (Cal Newport | 4 mins)
Cal Newport is the author of some books you may know like Deep Work and Digital Minimalism.
He’s currently publishing a number of posts that explore “the deep life.” You can find links to all his deep life posts in the last paragraph of this recent article.
“I strive to divide my focused attention among four categories: 1. community (family, friends, etc.); 2. craft (work and quality leisure); 3. constitution (health); and 4. contemplation (matters of the soul).” — Cal Newport
5 // Quote I’m Contemplating

Quote: “A mind that is fast is sick. A mind that is slow is sound. A mind that is still is divine.” — Meher Baba
Question: There are times to intentionally think fast and times to think slow. But, are you spending too much time with an unintentionally fast mind?

“A reminder of what it takes to be happy. The Hierarchy of Happiness is a great visual aid but make some time to read the whole piece. A lot of thought has gone into this … The infographic alone is a powerful reminder of what matters.” — Carl P, Sloww Reader
